The Colt Car-15 is the smallest of Marui's M16 based family of AEG's. But it is not the lightest. In fact the Car-15 weighs the same as an M16 A1 despite being much more compact. The reason for the weight is the amount of metal parts used on this AEG. The spring-loaded sliding stock itself is quite hefty, but the weight of the battery, which goes in the fore-grip, gives the gun a nice balance. The mag release, charging handle, rear sights, foregrip seats and fore-sight/barrel assembly are all metal, as is the very solid suppressor. This high metal content means the AEG Car-15 is the same weight as the real steel rifle, and it feels good.

The receiver itself is the same as that used on the A1 and VN, and if kept well (silicon) oiled will look pretty good. The Car-15 takes a small battery in the foregrip. I recommend starting each game with a fresh battery if possible, and maybe carry a spare too if you like to hose down the opposition. The 190 round high capacity magazine that comes with the Car-15 is a bonus, and though some might not like the look of them they are certainly more useful for skirmishing than standard magazines. Personally I think the smaller mags look good on the longer rifles (see
Stig
), and are only slightly lower in capacity than the hi-caps for Mp5s and Sigs. Certainly the smaller mag gives the gun the Vietnam era look, and rightly so, as the Car-15 was one of the first 'carbine' M16 varients developed in the 60s.

In the field the gun is compact and easy to move around with, and if the stock is kept short the Car-15 can easily be pointed over and around cover one handed. With the stock extended the gun can be shouldered comfortably and aimed very accurately. The barrel in the Car-15 is slighty longer than an MP5s, and broadly speaking range and accuracy are about the same. The EG700 motor gives the gun a very good rate of fire, and can be upgraded to an EG1000 with no modifications or extra parts required. A 300 round hi cap magazine will give you another advantage over MP5s, and a drum-mag would keep you happy for hours!!

The Car-15 is by far the least seen of the Marui M16 range of AEG's. I think this is because the MP5, which is generally similar in performance, gets all the limelight in the movies. But the Car-15 can take just about all the M16 accessories, mounts etc, and even has a few of its own (see below!!). Simple modifications would be a tighter barrel to increase range and accuracy, and a Dragunov flash-hider looks really cool on this AEG. The rareness and the fact that all my M16 parts would fit it were the main reasons I got a Car-15, another being the weight/feel of it. So don't overlook the Car-15, dare to be different!!
The gun is about 16cm longer now, and looks more rifle like, though it is still easy to handle. The kit adds more weight to the gun, a good thing in my opinion, and the silencer does muffle the sound enough to make it hard to tell where I'm firing from, especially on semi-auto.

The Car-15 still has the standard barrel in it, I may change it for a tighter/longer one but it's fine as it is just now. I should certainly wait and let everything settle in before any for tinkering takes place.

All in all, my Car-15 has evolved into a distinctive looking gun, which performance wise can hold it's own in any skirmish situation.

Another bonus is that the nearly new gearbox internals which the FTK replaced have been donated to keep the M16 A1 in good shape. I've been able to overhaul that gun for next to nothing!!

So now I've got a Car-15. I love the way it feels, good and solid. But the range is a little shorter than some guns, and its time I tried out one of these Full Tune-up Kits.........

So after a quick chat with the Airsoft Dynamics boys the Car is in my other car on it's way to the AD house for a Systema 1 joule speed FTK and a 9.6 volt battery to go with it. The gun was transformed; the gun fires at an amazingly steady 317fps, though this may change as the FTK, which replaces and upgrades just about all the gearbox internals settles in. Trousers (t2s APS sniper) looked rather miffed when I could match his range with my little gun with it's 25cm standard barrel, and on full auto an almost solid white line of BB's zips off into the distance. On semi-auto this gun is really nice to use as it is very accuarate at a long range, and I think the 190 mag will do for most games. It is certainly more satisfying to get a hit with a few BBs rather than a few bursts. If fired on full auto a lot this gun will empty 300 round mags at an alarming rate.

The first time I skirmished the upgraded gun it wore the Dragunov flash-hider, which looked really good, but I wanted to do something special and AD came up trumps again with a KM M16 SD Silencer kit. The adaptor kit consists of a black metal slotted tube which shrouds the fore-sight, a base plate for the silencer and an MP5 silencer adaptor. The Mp5 adaptor had to be replaced with a reverse to positive thread adaptor to fit the Car-15. The SD style silencer itself is also of black metal and is lined with foam to suppress the sound.

The parts used in this conversion are not cheap; around £170 for the Full Tune-up Kit and £95 for the silencer kit. But I only paid £155 for the AEG so the total cost would be £420. A lot of money, but worth it since I now have a gun I can use for everything, is small and compact and can match APS's for range. So this conversion is certainly cheaper than buying a second AEG. In fact I could probably get rid of all my other AEG's and this one would do me fine, but don't tell anyone I said that!!
