The XM177 E2 is a shortened carbine version of the M16 A1. It is another of the older AEGs in Tokyo Marui's range, and like the M16 A1 and FAMAS the XM is very reliable. The XM has a three position sliding stock and a shorter foregrip than the M16, allowing the gun to be used easily in tight spaces and thick woodland. The barrel is the same length as the M4's, and performance is generally similar, although the XM's EG700 motor gives a slightly lower rate of fire. This AEGs weak point is it's almost total lack of metal parts. The front end is a one piece plastic moulding, which although of high quality means that silencers etc cannot be screwed on. On the plus side the XM is one of the lightest AEGs available making them very easy to use and carry all day.
This AEG is solidly built and the gear box ('Version 2') is very reliable. The reciever design of the XM (and M16 A1/VN and Car15) is not the easiest to get into, especially as the tabs that the rear pin run through weaken and break off when the reciever has been opened a few times. But great care in opening/closing the two halves of the receiver will avoid this.
Like the rest of the M16 family the XM can use 300 round high capacity magazines which are great for skirmishing. We run the hire XMs at Ambush on horse-shoe type batteries which fit in the fore grip but can last all day, much longer than the standard 'small' batteries. These batteries are also 9.6 volt increasing the rate of fire to that of an M4.
XM's are not great AEGs if you want to put lots of accessories on it or tune it a lot. Not that they can't be upgraded, they just don't like being messed with a lot. If you want realism, metal parts, weight and easy working get an M4. If you want a cheap, effective and reliable AEG get an XM! |
